What it was like on the ground
The Enshi Grand Canyon is a leg-burner: we climbed thousands of steps to reach the cliff paths, then walked the ridgeline past the One Pillar of Fragrance as clouds filled the gorge below. It genuinely earns the Colorado comparison, though it is greener and wetter, and the pillar is more surreal in person than any photo suggests. The Qingjiang boat trip the next day was the calm counterpoint — two hours of limestone walls sliding past with barely another boat on the water, and a Tujia boatman singing a song in the distance. Enshi is not polished, and English is scarce, but it is the Hubei most foreigners miss entirely, and that is precisely its appeal. Bring grippy shoes, water, and a tolerance for thousands of stairs — the canyon is a full day and the descent into the fissure is as steep as the climb up.

What should you eat in Enshi Grand Canyon?
Hezha (合渣) CNY 15-30
A Tujia staple: pounded soybeans cooked with greens, eaten with rice and pickles. Cheap, filling and the taste of Enshi's countryside.
Kang potatoes (炕土豆) CNY 10-20
Enshi's mountain potatoes pan-fried until golden and tossed with chili and scallion. The perfect trail snack.
Tujia cured meat (土家腊肉) CNY 40-80
Smoked pork, often stir-fried with wild bamboo or dried tofu. The backbone of Enshi's home cooking.
